Sitka Seafood Festival - August 10 - 11, 2012

Celebrate Alaska's Wild Seafood

Sitka celebrated the most valuable wild food source on the planet and one of the most important industries during 2010 in its inaugural Sitka Seafood Festival, Aug 6 - 7, 2010. The purpose of this festival was to experience Alaska's wild and sustainable seafood through entertainment, education and culinary delights. The festival was coordinated by a long list of volunteers, and most grateful for help from our very generous sponsors throughout the community and maritime-based companies. The 2010 event was a two day festival starting Friday evening with the sold out banquet dinner. The dinner showcased Sitka's natural resources with four local chefs and our guest chef Robert Kinneen from ORSO in Anchorage, each preparing a different course.

The following day was an all-day event, starting with a maritime-themed parade, followed by booths celebrating seafood, maritime culture and traditions, as well as locally-based culinary creations. There were many exciting contests and demonstrations for adults and children including a tote race in the harbor, fish head toss, as well as knot tying demonstrations and filleting demos. Sitka Folk helped top the evening off with an amazing show with local bands and artists, featuring Trampled by Turtles.

We have learned a great deal from the first two years, and planning for 2012 is already underway. This year we would like to invite everyone and anyone interested in the maritime or seafood related community to take part. We would love to have more educational based demonstrations and information, as well as a larger involvement from the fishing community. This year’s event is scheduled for August 10 - 11, 2012 and will be a similar schedule to last year. If you would like more information or would like to be involved in any way, please contact us at sitkaseafoodfestival@gmail.com or contact Alicia Olson at 928-607-4845
